Why do you need a VPN for Netflix?

Choosing the best VPN provider for Netflix can be tricky because Netflix actively tries to block access from VPN servers. They can only do this by blocking the IP address of a server. Therefore, many premium VPN providers make sure that they always have a server that allows you to watch Netflix.

Some even offer the option of a dedicated IP address

This means that you are the only one using that IP address on the VPN server (normally you share an IP address with other VPN users). In addition, the VPN must be fast, because you don't want your movie or series to falter or to buffer frequently. Based on this, we came up with the following, best VPNs for Netflix. Want to do more research into VPN’s first? Then read the guide ”What is a VPN?

How does a VPN for Netflix work?

Many people have Netflix these days. The streaming service offers many movies and series and has become increasingly popular over the years. Although the offer of Netflix is quite large in many countries, there may still be some movies or series not available in your location.

Netflix offer varies from country to country.

For example, the offer of the American Netflix is much larger than that of a country like Spain. As a user it can therefore be interesting to take a look at the Netflix offer of another country. As a Spaniard, you do not have access to the Netflix offerings from other countries. This is because Netflix can see from your IP address where you are. Fortunately, there is a simple solution to solve this problem: use a VPN for Netflix.

VPN to secure internet connection and ensure online privacy

However, you can also use it to bypass geographical blockages. From Spain (or any country), you can use a VPN to connect through an American server. You then get an American IP address. Netflix thinks you are in America and you can enjoy a larger Netflix offering this way.

  • This also works the other way around. During your stay abroad you can use a VPN and connect to a server in another country. You can then enjoy the full range of series and movies even while on vacation.

These should be the best options for people abroad. (Read more about cheapthe fastest or the best VPN’s here) Or for someone who just wants to stream more movies, like us! Below are the VPNs that still unblock Netflix through their streaming servers:

What did we test to find the 7 best Netflix VPN providers?

We tested several Netflix VPN providers on the aspects below to then come up with the top 7 best VPNs for Netflix that you see at the top of this article.

Accessing Netflix

If you want to use a VPN to watch Netflix with, it's helpful that the VPN actually works with Netflix. As we already mentioned, Netflix blocks many VPNs. You will then automatically see an error when you try to watch a movie or series with a VPN connection. Not all VPN providers try to get around these blockages, so it is always important to check if the VPN of your choice does.

We try to update this article regularly. Unfortunately, the battle between Netflix and VPN services is constant, so it may just depend on the moment whether or not a particular provider's servers work with Netflix.

Speed

Another important factor to think about if you want to watch Netflix with a VPN is speed. You probably don't feel like waiting a long time for your movie or episode to finally load. That's why internet speed is very important.

A VPN can make your internet connection slower, because all your data is redirected through other servers. With some VPN providers you hardly notice this difference, but with other services the delay can be very frustrating. The stability of the connection should also be good. When testing the VPNs in our top 4, we paid extra attention to this.

Customer service

Because VPN providers constantly have to look for new IP addresses and new ways to get around geo-blocking, it can happen that Netflix blocks certain servers of a provider. At such a time, a VPN's customer service becomes important. If the VPN provider offers good support, for example with a live chat, they can immediately help you find a server that is not yet blocked by Netflix.

Dedicated IP

Earlier you could briefly read that it is positive if a VPN offers a dedicated IP address for Netflix. But why is this so? Netflix is trying to stop the use of VPNs on their platform by blocking them. However, they can only do this by blocking the IP address of the relevant VPN server.

  • With a VPN, the way it works is that people can connect simultaneously through a particular server. So it may appear that 50 people want to watch Netflix from the same computer. Of course, this catches Netflix's eye, so they are more likely to see that this is a VPN server. They then deny this IP address access to their service.

With a dedicated IP, you are the only one using that specific IP address. As a result, it will never seem like multiple people are watching Netflix from the same computer at the same time. Netflix will therefore be less likely to notice that it is a VPN server and will not simply deny you access.

Access on different devices

If you are a heavy user of Netflix (like us) then you probably also use Netflix on your smart TV, laptop, tablet or smartphone. You can also use a VPN on all of these devices. The VPNs we recommended earlier usually have handy apps for all these devices and can therefore be installed quite easily. So enjoy an extensive Netflix offering on all your devices like your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, Chromecast, Android TV and other Android devices.

Netflix does not always work with a VPN. This is because Netflix is against circumventing geographical blockages. As such, they actively try to counteract this. However, because Netflix was founded in America, American users have a larger selection and that is something that the rest of Netflix users would like to have access to as well. In addition, there are sometimes agreements between producers and Netflix that their offerings may only be shown in specific countries

1. TunnelBear does not work with Netflix

  • United States
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Netherlands

TunnelBear, a VPN provider located in Ontario with the stated goal of bringing “the benefits of privacy to everyone,” wasn’t able to provide a connection to Netflix from their U.S., Canada, U.K. or Netherlands servers.

2. VPN.AC does not work with Netflix

  • United States
  • Canada (2)

Unlike many providers, Romanian-based VPN.ac makes no mention of content unblocking or content access on their features page. In a blog post published after Netflix’s 2016 announcement, the company said they had seen the block of their service coming following Netflix’s global expansion, and that they found the lack of Netflix transparency around their regional content offerings to amount to “false-advertising.” A further statement notes that the reason Netflix blocked VPNs in the first place  and the behest of the content owners was an “archaic entertainment distribution model.”

3. Private Tunnel does not work with Netflix

  • United States: New York
  • United States: Chicago
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom: London
  • Netherlands

Private Tunnel, a California-based VPN provider, wasn’t able to connect to any of the Netflix servers we tested  a limitation the company knows about and isn’t attempting to fix.

4. Kaspersky does not work with Netflix

  • United States: New York
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom: London
  • Netherlands

Kaspersky Secure Connection VPN is powerhouse antivirus company Kaspersky’s first foray into the VPN space. Users of the VPN service have put in support tickets related to Netflix last year, suggesting that the service may have once worked to unblock streaming; it currently doesn’t.

5. Avast SecureLine does not work with Netflix

  • United States: Washington
  • United States: New York
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Netherlands

Founded in 1988 and headquartered in the Czech Republic, Avast is a multinational cybersecurity software company that manufactures everything from VPNs to antivirus protection.Their VPN, Avast SecureLine, boasts the ability to unblock content specifically, their website notes that, with SecureLine, you can “Enjoy your favorite TV shows as you choose.” However, we found that Netflix was blocked on all the servers we tried.

6. F-Secure Freedom does not work with Netflix

  • United States: East Coast
  • United States: West Coast
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Netherlands

The tagline for F-Secure, noted directly on their homepage, is “Protect your privacy. Access blocked content.” which makes it somewhat surprising that all the servers we tried five in total were blocked. Digging deeper, we found that the site issued a statement from 2016, following the ban, which they still reference in support forums today. It says in the statement that they have limited ways to prevent third-party blocking, and expect customers to respect third-party terms.

7. Hoxx VPN does not work with Netflix

  • United States: New York
  • United Kingdom: London
  • Netherlands

Germany-based Hoxx VPN mentioned the ability to bypass blocked websites, and makes reference to “geo-based content,” but doesn’t mention streaming specifically, and we were unable to access Netflix using it.

Can I use a free VPN for Netflix?

Many free VPNs do not work with Netflix because Netflix has blocked the IP addresses of those servers. In addition, free VPNs often have a server limit, data limit or speed limit.

The server limit often prevents you from accessing Netflix. If you do have access, the data limit means you can only watch Netflix to a limited extent. In addition, speed limits can cause you to experience annoying choppiness while streaming your favorite series or movie. Instead of a free VPN, it's better to opt for a cheap, premium VPN, such as Surfshark.

Watching Netflix with a VPN is perfectly legal in most countries and in other countries where the use of a VPN is allowed. In some countries such as China and Russia, the use of a VPN is prohibited and, of course, watching Netflix with a VPN is also not allowed.

Conclusion, what is best Netflix VPN provider?

The war between Netflix and VPN providers following the ban hasn’t been pretty, with VPN users declaring that they’re canceling their Netflix subscriptions as a result of the ban to VPN providers desperately trying to find workarounds only to be blocked again.

Until the licensing model changes or until Netflix can find a way to make all of their content globally available, the goal they mentioned in their statement announcing the ban it’s a war that will continue to rage.

  • As you read, a VPN is an excellent way to get more out of your Netflix account. After all, you not only get access to the standard Netflix version when you are abroad, but also to the American Netflix with a larger selection.
  • We recommend that you choose a good, premium VPN. The best VPNs to choose as far as we are concerned are NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Surfshark.
  • These VPNs work well with Netflix and all have their own pluses. NordVPN has a good value for money, is very secure and offers the option of a dedicated IP, ExpressVPN is an all-round great VPN with good and fast customer service, CyberGhost is very user-friendly and decently priced and Surfshark is the best choice for a small wallet.
